Media Trends: Reality TV’s Latest and Greatest: Some good – others not so much

It’s the tail end of the year and that means the Reality TV Fall and 2010 schedule will start to reveal itself. I was digging into what’s to come from broadcast and cable networks off of Andy Dehnart’s Reality Blurred. Some of these shows look very interesting – others – not so much.
That said – who knows – the American consumer is super fickle these days.
Some new reality shows that stick out for better or worse:
NBC’s SING OFF. Nick Lachey and a show about Acapella singers? Really NBC – really? Didn’t you fill your AMERICAN IDOL quota by delivering AMERICA’S GOT TALENT? Don’t see millions of people tuning in to hear singers – just don’t think that’s visually captivating enough.
Bank of Hollywood on E! from Ryan Seascrest sounds really interesting – bringing the common man or woman to Hollywood in pursuit of getting some dollars for a venture or a specific “need” they have. This is a different look coming from E! and I appreciate them stepping out of their comfort zone a little bit – it always help when a name (Seacrest) gets behind a project to get a little something cooking that is a little off to the left. Let’s see how this one turns out.
TLC is getting Wedding Crazy! They have four new weddings projects that are to debut in the near future. BRIDEZILLAS has done incredibly well for WE tv so I’m sure that heavily influenced the creative and programming team at TLC to dive head first into the space and see what can come out of it.
UNDERCOVER BOSS on CBS sounds damn interesting – high level corporate executives as they slip anonymously into the lowest level jobs within their companies. Once undercover, they’ll get their hands dirty with the rank and file, find out what their employees REALLY think of them and discover how smoothly their companies are REALLY run. In the process, these senior executives learn about themselves, the perception of their company and the spirit of their work force.
